AKABEKO

Akabeko is a folk craft that was started by Ujisato Gamo, the lord of the Aizu domain, about 400 years ago. The name comes from the red cow that warded off the plague that spread during the Heian period, and the red color is thought to ward off disease. The black dots on the red bee represent smallpox (smallpox), and the red bee was used as a scapegoat to protect young children from smallpox, which used to be a deadly disease. It is said that it was painted here. It was the custom of lower-ranking samurai in Aizu to shake their heads to pray for their children to grow up strong and healthy. It is now able to shake its head to comfort the child.
